too much

a quick summary of some shifts.
that three in a row? saturday i have covered...
Sunday-
sunday was GOOD. who knew? so saturday was so horrible, and we decided to bring in food. so i brought brownies and ice cream, keisha brought dip, and uclin brought some chips. The tube system STILL wasn't fixed, so at one point Keisha and I took a field trip to the lab to pick up blood and drop off something else, and to the pharmacy to pick up an insulin pen, and to the vending machines for coke. AND at like midnight keisha walks up to the desk and was like "Elizabeth, you gotta take 5, take 5. go getchu something to eat, deez brownies are off da chain!" so we all sat down with our styrofoam cups of ice cream and brownies, and we just hung out and chatted at the desk for 20 minutes or so. SO rejuvenating. it was one of my favorite shifts thus far.

i know monday wasn't quite as good as sunday, but not a bad shift. and my wednesday shift i just don't even remember. and then i took 8 days off to go visit Kara and baby faye in maryland.

When i got back, i worked friday, and i was just so so unmotivated to be there. luckily my group was really easy. unfortunately sometimes that makes me lazier because i'm not forced into action. i had a bunch of eye patients. one was blind in one eye, one had an infection in one eye and blurryness in the other, one guy needed the lights on full strength to see anything ( i don't remember his particular eye ailment...). either way it was a weird theme for the evening.

this week i worked tuesday and wednesday. tuesday i was floated to Med/surg for the first time. they totally took care of me :) i started with 5 walkie talkie patients, and got an admission in the middle of the night. i had enough time to take a 30 minute break!!!! i don't know WHEN the last time that happened. by 10 pm i was done giving meds and had charted on a couple of my patients already. my admission was only difficult because he was 87, couldn't hear worth anything, couldn't see well, and mumbled so i could hardly understand him. he had some family member with him who was totally useless as far as giving me information, so i couldn't finish the patient profile, which i felt bad about buuut i did what i could. i mean for real, i had a good group of patients. it was a little unnerving to switch environments, but that was to be expected, and luckily no one threw me under the bus or anything.

thursday... oh god. i was so tired, and upset, and emotionally drained when i got to work. and i had 4 patients on the floor, and one new admit who would arrive after dialysis. Well. my dialysis patient came down around 9ish... and around 9:30, they let me know i was getting a second admission. it was horrible. i don't even think i'd had time to do anything but make sure my first admit was alive, much less actually get anything done on her paperwork. my second patient was on the floor by 10:30, and i made sure he was alive and then spent 20 minutes crying on the phone to lauren. i just felt so beaten down and like i had no control. i then got my patients off to bed, worked on charting, and MARs, and really the night wasn't so horrible after that, but i was so torn up that it took everything in me not to start crying again, and not to curl up in one of the lobby chairs to sleep. and i didn't finish either patient profile. i just didn't have it in me to wake up my patients to try to get all the information.

and now i'm about to do a three in a row. i'm scared in all honesty. i just don't know how long i can handle this.
